Build a Treadle Lathe

Join veteran woodworker, teach, blacksmith, and artist Vince Sanborn to learn how to build your own foot-powered lathe. This class is designed for intermediate-level woodworkers who are familiar with and have experience using all of the basic power shop tools and hand tools. This treadle-powered lathe is the perfect way to start wood turning.  The electric lathe can be daunting to beginning turners due to its reputation as one of the most dangerous tools in the shop. 

Using just bicycle gears, ball bearings, and human "steam" power, this machine is more responsive than an electric lathe so it provides a safer way to turn for those who are new to turning, since you can adjust the speed to a rate that feels comfortable. But it is also powerful enough for an experienced woodworker.

In this class you'll start from scratch, measuring and marking parts, and planning your build. Then you'll cut all of the pieces using your choice of hand tools and power tools, and bring it all together by assembling and finishing your lathe. NOTE: the image above shows one style of treadle lathe but does not represent the exact design you will be building.

The materials fee (included during checkout) covers all the costs of lumber and mechanical parts, which are all sourced by the instructor.

***JOINT INSTRUCTION: For an additional fee, students are welcomed to bring a second builder to the class. This is a great opportunity to learn and have fun together. A joint instruction ticket must accompany someone taking the full instruction who purchases a materials kit. Select the "Joint Instruction" option when checking out.
