Director of Education Sarah Wassberg Johnson recounts the role of the Hudson River in forming the modern environmental movement in the United States, with special emphasis on the story of the proposed, and ultimately defeated, Consolidated Edison pumped storage hydroelectric power plant at Storm King Mountain and how it galvanized a generation of environmental activists to protect the Hudson River. Groups influenced by the proposed power plant include Scenic Hudson, the Hudson River Fishermen's Association (later Riverkeeper), and Clearwater.

Wassberg Johnson was a lead staff member in the creation of the new temporary exhibit, "Rescuing the River: 50 Years of Environmental Activism on the Hudson," on view at the Hudson River Maritime Museum now through December, 2021.
