Dr. Harvy Flad will give an overview of the fight to protect the viewshed of the Olana State Historic Site (home of Hudson River School painter Frederic Church) from industrial development. His overview of the important of the viewshed includes the 2005 fight to prevent the construction of a new St. Lawrence Cement Plant within the viewshed. 

Speaker Bio: 

Harvey K. Flad is Emeritus Professor of Geography at Vassar College in Poughkeepsie, New York.  He received his B.A. from the University of Colorado-Boulder in 1962, taught in the Peace Corps in Nigeria from 1962-64, and worked at the American Geographical Society from 1965-68. He received his Ph.D. from Syracuse University in 1973, and from 1972 to 2004 at Vassar taught courses in Geography and Environmental, American, and Urban Studies. He was Chair of the Earth Science (Geology) and Geography Department for over a decade, served as Director of the latter two multidisciplinary programs, Director of the Exploring Transfer Program, Director of the college’s Office of Affirmative Action, and Chair of the Faculty Policy and Conference Committee (faculty senate), 2001-2003.
