Build an R/C Model Yacht

In this class model yacht expert John Stoudt will take you through the process of building either a Vintage 36/600 (Chico II), Marblehead 50/800 (Madcap), or a 46" Mystic Schooner remote control (RC) sailboat, completing it on Friday and sailing it on Saturday morning (schooner excepted). These boats sail well. The schooner because of its detail cannot be completed in the week but significant progress will be achieved so the student can complete it at home. A boat will be made available for the Saturday sail.

All materials will be provided, including hull, ballast, fittings, sails, spars, and electronics. Beginners are welcome and the course will include training in the use of radio-controlled sailboats. The instructor will prepare certain materials ahead of time to ensure the student has everything needed and the time necessary during the week to complete his/her boat. Families who wish to build one model with 2 persons will only have to purchase one kit but will have to pay the additional Joint Tuition.

Friends or family of a student are welcome to participate in the class as a 2nd  builder on the construction of a single boat. This is a great opportunity to learn and work together with the ability to bring the skills home for the construction of your next model. Joint instruction must be accompanied with someone taking the full instruction and purchasing a kit.

Instructor: John Stoudt
John retired as a public-school educator with 45 years’ experience as an industrial arts teacher and school administrator. In retirement his interests turned to building, collecting, and sailing model pond yachts. He has built and or restored over seventy model yachts a number of which he sails competitively throughout the mid-Atlantic and New England states. His favorite boat is a 1934 Marblehead class boat which he acquired in Marblehead, completely restored, and rigged for RC sailing. With this boat he has sailed in numerous national and other regattas finishing in the top three on multiple occasions.

Currently, John serves on the executive board of the American Model Yachting Association and on that organization’s magazine, Model Yachting, editorial staff. He is actively involved in the reorganization of the US Vintage Model Yacht Group as president. He is instrumental in the acquisition and preparation of the articles that appear in The Model Yacht, the journal of the vintage group. He started an RC sailing club in his area, the Chester Springs Model Yacht Club, and is an active member of the Mid-Atlantic Model Yacht Club in New Jersey. He works in retirement as the Little Boat Builder building and restoring model yachts. He has worked on over 70 boats, old and new. John has taught classes in R/C sailing and model yacht restoration.
