Silver Dollar Girls: The Women Pilots of WWII

In 1941, General Hap Arnold made a surprising and bold decision to allow civilian female pilots to assist in the effort to win WW II. For two years, more than one thousand women flew military aircraft for the US Army Airforce. A local pilot, Ruth Franckling, was part of that effort. Margaret DiBenedetto has written a novel, Silver Dollar Girls, set in the Catskill Mountains, that highlights her mother's role in aviation history. Please join us as a daughter shares her mother's story. 

Presenter:

Margaret DiBenedetto studied creative writing at Sam Houston State Universitywith Texas Poet Laureate Dr. Paul Ruffin, and earned a Bachelor of Science degree from Oneanta State University. She chairs the Board of Directors for the Catskill Center for Conservation and Development and is a Trustee of the Michael Kudish Natural History Preserve in Stansford, NY. She is a past board member of Writers in the Mountains, and lives on the farm where she grew up near Fleischmanns.

This program is being presented in-person at the Hudson River Maritime Museum's Wooden Boat School. The Wooden Boat School is located at 86 Rondout Landing, Kingston, NY 12401.
