Youth Woodworking Week 2: Make a Stool & Bandsaw Spoon

07/22/2024 10:00 AM - 07/26/2024 02:00 PM ET

Description

The Youth Woodworking class series is designed to introduce youths ages 12 - 16 to the basics of woodworking and carpentry. In each 4 hour class, woodworker Wayne Ford will teach the fundamentals of shop safety, measuring, layout, joinery, and the use and care of basic hand woodworking tools and some power tools. At the end of the week, students get to take home a finished project that they made themselves.

During this July 22 - 26 class, students will make two projects: a bandsaw spoon and a stool. To do so, they'll learn how to use some of the basic power shop tools like the band saw, measuring tools like the marking gauge and French curve, as well as hand tools like the power drill, screw gun, rasp, spoke shave, chisel, and hand plane. Starting with the design, layout and planning of each project, they'll practice precision skills of measurement and marking, gain hand-eye coordination and dexterity, as well as learn how to carve and shape the spoon and how to cut, fit and fasten the parts of the stool.

Class groups are limited to 8 participants so that each student receives individual attention and hands-on experience. Students register separately for each one-week session, and can register for one or more sessions. No matter how many classes they take, all students will have a rewarding experience that builds the confidence and pride in workmanship that can come from woodworking. Other available sessions include:

Week 1, July 8 - 12: Build a Toolbox

Week 3, August 5 - 9: Build a Bandsaw Box & Do Nothing Machine
