Youth Woodworking Week 4: Make a Half Hull Boat Model

08/19/2024 10:00 AM - 08/23/2024 03:00 PM ET

Description

The Youth Woodworking class series is designed to introduce youths ages 12 - 16 to the basics of woodworking and carpentry. In each class, woodworker Wayne Ford will teach the fundamentals of shop safety, measuring, layout, and the use and care of basic hand woodworking tools and some power tools. At the end of the week, students get to take home a finished project that they made themselves.

During this August 19 - 23 class, students will make a half hull boat model. In shipbuilding, half hulls were originally used by boat builders to study and refine the hull shape of a vessel prior to full size construction. Students will carve a half hull of their own from the lines drawing of the Hudson River Sloop Clearwater. Starting with the layout and planning of the model, they'll practice precision skills of accuracy and measurement, gain hand-eye coordination and dexterity, and learn how to cut, fit and fasten the parts, resulting in a finished project. To do so, they'll learn how to use some of the basic power shop tools like a band saw, as well as hand tools like the chisel, block plane, gouge and rasp.

Class groups are limited to 8 participants so that each student receives individual attention and hands-on experience. Students register separately for each one-week session, and can register for one or more sessions. No matter how many classes they take, all students will have a rewarding experience that builds the confidence and pride in workmanship that can come from woodworking. NOTE: unlike the other 4-hour Youth Woodworking sessions, this session is 5 hours per day. Other available sessions include:

Week 1, July 8 - 12: Build a Toolbox
