Half Hull Boat Model Carving

05/24/2024 09:00 AM - 05/25/2024 05:00 PM ET

Description

Join shipwright Wayne Ford in this two-day class where he will teach half hull model carving. In shipbuilding, half hulls were originally used by boat builders to study and refine the hull shape of a vessel prior to full size construction. Students will carve a half hull of their own from the lines drawing of the Hudson River Sloop Clearwater.

Starting with the layout and planning of the model, you'll practice precision skills of accuracy and measurement, practice hand tool technique, and learn how to cut, fit and fasten the parts, resulting in a finished project. To build your model, you'll learn how to use some of the basic power shop tools like a band saw, as well as hand tools like the chisel, block plane, gouge and rasp.

All tools and materials required are included, but you are welcome to bring your own carving tools. No prior woodworking experience is required to take this class.
